Jhomolhari Trek

This is a superb trek for average walkers. It goes into northern Bhutan to the land of yak herders and to the base of Mt. Jhomolhari at 7,316 meters (24,000 feet) and on to remote Lingshi Dzong.

DAY 01

Arrival in Paro. You may avail Druk Air, national airline or Bhutan Airline which is privately owned to come to Bhutan. The tour guide will receive you at the airport and escort you to your dwelling inn where you can relax and anticipate yourself for a memorable experience for the coming days.

DAY 02

Taktshang Monastery and Ta Dzong

Taktshang is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Bhutan. It is a monastery built on a mountain about 2600 meters and is known worldwide for historic significance and extraordinary legendary events associated with it. Taktshang is literally translated as “Tiger’s lair” where the great saint Guru Rinpoche is believed to have flown on a flying tigress to meditate there for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours in the 8th century. After lunch, the next destination will be the National Museum locally known as Ta Dzong that served as Watch tower in the times of our forefathers

DAY 03

The Beginning of Jhomolhari Trek

The day will be started by visiting Drugyel Dzong. Drugyel Dzong is approximately about 16 kms away from the main town of Paro. It is a must visit place in Paro which hold so much of historic importance. The name can directly be translated as “The Fortress of Victory” since it was built back in 1644 by the Great Master, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel to mark glory over the Tibetans who waged invasive war against the Bhutanese centuries ago. The fortress was ruined by fire 1951. However, re-construction of the fortress started in 2016 coinciding with the birth of Crown Prince, Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck. From Drugyel Dzong, the trek is planned for 15 kms and approximately six hours of time. Follow the Paro Chu upstream through the village of Tshento on a dirt road for about an hour. Lunch will be served. Just before reaching the camp, we will have to pass through an army check post, where your guide will produce your trekking permit. Shana will be the final destination for the day.

DAY 04

Shana to Thangthangkha

The trail from Shana to Thangthangkha will see rocky series of small ups and downs along the Paro Chu and can be very muddy if it rains. About 2 ½ hours into the trek, the road will divert and will come acorss a junction where the trail branches to go to Tibet. The journey till Thangthangkha will be about 8 hours covering 21kms of shrubby and moist land.

DAY 05

Thangthangkha to Jangothang

The trekking route today will take you through the depth of adventures and beautiful views. The final destination of Jangothang will show you the majestic view of Mount Jomolhari. It is a journey of about 16 kms through sparse settlements, abandoned houses and yak herds. Enjoy the cold night at Jangothang.

DAY 06

Halt at Jangothang

The 6th day would be the day to rest and an optional hike to Lake Tshophu about 2hrs walk from Jangothang at the altitude of 4300 meters above sea level.

DAY 07

Jangothang to Yaksa

Four hours from Jangothang, you will reach a pass giving you exhilarating views of Jomolhari and Jichu Drakey. Then climb down for about 3 hours to reach your camp at Yaksa.

DAY 08

Yaksa to Thombu

The journey is for about 5 hours covering 14 kms through yak herds and villages until you reach Thombu.

DAY 09

Thombu to Gunitsawa

 The journey is for about 6 hours covering 17 kms through yak herds and villages until you reach Gunitsawa.

DAY 10

Gunitsawa to Paro

Today is the last day of your trekking journey. We will now trek down to Drugyel Dzong where your vehicle wll be waiting for you. Drive back to your hotel and relax.
